The US has recorded more than 1.3 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 and over 78 thousand deaths. Former US president Barack Obama said the way that the Trump administration has been dealing with the pandemic is an “absolute chaotic disaster”.
“What we’re fighting against is these long-term trends in which being selfish, being tribal, being divided, and seeing others as an enemy — that has become a strong impulse in American life,” Mr Obama said.
His comments came during a conference call involving 3,000 members of his former administration. Obama indicated that Trump’s plan is selfish and focused on dividing the nation in order to win votes in the upcoming election.
“And, by the way, we’re seeing that internationally as well. It’s part of the reason why the response to this global crisis has been so anaemic and spotty.
“It would have been bad even with the best of governments. It has been an absolute chaotic disaster when the mindset of ‘what’s in it for me?’ and ‘to heck with everybody else’ — when that mindset is operationalised in our Government,” he said.
Mr Trump has consistently applauded himself over his response to the virus, holding up his decision to put up strong travel restrictions on people from China and Europe as the primary reason far greater damage has not been suffered. “I think saved millions of lives,” he said.
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany defended Mr Trump saying, “President Trump’s coronavirus response has been unprecedented and saved American lives.
“While Democrats were pursuing a sham witch hunt against President Trump, President Trump was shutting down travel from China.”
